Revitalization

The Latrobe Community Revitalization Program

The Latrobe Community Revitalization Program is a community-driven, comprehensive effort to encourage and strengthen economic development, prevent downtown deterioration and promote a sense of community within the historic preservation of our downtown business district while advocating a return to community self-reliance, local empowerment and rebuilding based on our unique assets for the benefit of the greater Latrobe area.

Vision Statement Comes To Life

March 15, 2006 - The Latrobe Community Revitalization Program has unveiled its official Vision Statement, which local citizens helped to create by attending the series of three visioning workshops throughout February and March. This statement will assist in guiding the Program’s Board members and volunteers achieve the goals toward revitalizing the City

"On behalf of the Latrobe Revitalization Board of Directors, we are so thankful to all of the citizens who attended our visioning workshops,” said Megan Grote, Volunteer Program Manager for the revitalization effort. “The input and ideas we gathered will be invaluable to the success of this program, and we highly encourage and appreciate your continued participation and enthusiasm in the future.”

The vision statement:

Latrobe is a small town with a strong community spirit and proud heritage.  Founded as a railroad town in the mid-1800s, Latrobe developed into an innovative and renowned industrial center, which continues as a vital part of its economy and way of life.  Latrobe and the greater community is also recognized as the boyhood homes of celebrity legends Mister Rogers and Arnold Palmer, and the summer home of the Pittsburgh Steelers at nearby Saint Vincent College.  Latrobe is known to many throughout the country as the town where Rolling Rock Beer is brewed.  Building on its enduring heritage, small town assets, popular reputation, and ties to the greater community, the Latrobe of the future will continue to provide a great quality of life that is characterized by:

  • A vibrant, attractive, historically-attuned, and walkable downtown that serves the greater community with a variety of business, professional, and cultural venues
  • Well-maintained public areas that have a pleasant mix of landscaping and green space
  • Outstanding recreational activities and amenities that are well-designed for all ages, attracting many participants and visitors
  • Well-kept, traditional neighborhoods that are safe, family-oriented and pedestrian-friendly
  • A strong business base that is progressive in an environment that encourages entrepreneurship, investment, and close civic/business relations
  • Dynamic educational, civic, religious, and healthcare institutions with close, productive relationships within the community

Next steps:

In the coming months, the revitalization committee will apply for a $90,000 grant from the Pennsylvania Main Street program to help accomplish this vision. Prior to submitting the application, the revitalization committee, the city's elected officials and local residents will initiate a fundraising plan to generate bona fide commitments for a matching $90,000 in funding. The Pennsylvania Main Street program has already worked for more than 1,800 communities, providing cities with tools to improve the overall climate, culture and, ultimately, the ability to sustain their well-being.
